Being an engineer is a very challenging and exciting career. Each day contains fresh challenges relating to machinery, production, safety, quality and people. The main objective of an engineer in a production plant is to ensure that the processes run at optimum capacity. This is achieved by limiting the number of delays caused by equipment failures, with due consideration for the environment and safety of all personnel involved in the production processes.
The engineer is provided with the necessary resources to obtain the objective stated above. These resources have to be applied in such a way as to achieve the highest possible return. An engineer will typically head a team comprising of foremen and artisans - and must fulfill the role of leader to adequately and effectively ensure that the team work together to obtain set targets.
Accountability is an integral aspect of any engineer's work since engineers are held accountable for the outcome of their decisions. Maintenance planning, spares control, organising, budgeting and controlling are also amongst some of the daily functions of an engineer.
An engineer must therefore be a dynamic leader, able to overcome any challenge and use the available resources effectively in order to attain and maintain sustainable success.
