General Overview

Evraz Highveld provides a number of service facilities to its divisions; most are centralised at the iron and steel works but, where necessary, the divisions have their own. At the iron and steel works there is a central repair workshop with machine tools where much of the maintenance work is done. Evraz Highveld's transport department controls about 300 vehicles, including heavy mobile equipment and a locomotive fleet of nine.

The metallurgical and process development departments monitor product quality and conduct research into process and product improvement. Here the skills of individuals from each of the divisions are combined for best results.

Environmental control is an important priority for Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadium. All plants which could discharge effluents are fitted with equipment to prevent this occurring. The functioning of the equipment is monitored constantly and Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadium liaises on an ongoing basis with the relevant government departments.

Evraz Highveld’s electricity is supplied by Eskom. Oxygen for its steelworks is supplied from a plant operated by AFROX Oxygen. Water is drawn from Witbank (Emalahleni) municipal dam and, in the interest of water conservation, Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadium water treatment plants and process water circuits have been designed to eliminate water wastage and effluent.

Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadium undertakes staff training in all engineering disciplines. Apprentices follow a modular system of instructions on the job and at Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadium well equipped training centre. There are also a number of graduate engineers in training at Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadium's various divisions. Financial study assistance is available. All employees have access to Evraz Highveld Steel and Vanadium's home-ownership scheme.

The corporation also contracts canteen facilities out to the Small Business Initiative.
