Mining - Iron Ore
Magnetite Iron Ore is supplied to Evraz Highveld’s Iron Plant from its Mapochs open cast mine near Roossenekal, 140 kilometers north east from Witbank (Emalahleni).
The ore body lies in two seams. The top seam is close to the surface and is about one third of a meter thick. The main seam, which consists of two layers about two meters thick in total, is separated from the top seam by a shallow layer of waste. Strip mining methods are used and the ore is crushed, washed and screened before being railed to Evraz Highveld.
Water for the mine comes from a 500 000 cubic meter capacity dam built some 10 kilometers away on the Mapochs River.
